In each scene, between one and four characters talk to each other without having a genuine dialogue. A satire on human behaviour, occasionally underlined by the appearance of insects (praying mantis, fly): humans are observed like insects through the entomologist's magnifying glass.
At the beginning, the author mentions a reality - that of Austria, mainly - from which he then breaks free, leading the audience into a burlesque and dreamlike world. Situations are taken to the extreme, characters are interchangeable. The comedy hinges on great verbal virtuosity, characterised by comic repetition. The comedy is the vehicle for a critique of Austrian society, where the only freedom consists in flying away (Elvira and the fly) or dying like the poet (Death of the poet), with your head in the gas oven.
