A lonely young pianist moves into an apartment that was previously occupied by another pianist who threw himself out of the window. Besieged by 'well-meaning' neighbours, he is gradually sucked into their petit-bourgeois scheming and loses his own independence until he too chooses the path of self-defenestration. However, the young pianist doesn't die and comes back to haunt the lives of his neighbours, thus becoming 'one of them'.

Written in the style of a black comedy, this play offers an extremely sober yet highly amusing view of freedom and the right to be different. These fundamental issues are tinged with a laughter that constantly conveys a strange mix of different realities.
The situation, handled by devilishly clever writing, constantly wavers between the life and 'good habits' of the lower middle class, and the personal experience of events and state of mind of an individual lost in such an environment.
This entanglement between the commonplace - and generally accepted ideas - and the fragility of individual will provides both a social portrait of bourgeois absurdity and a real mental drama.
